A palladium-catalyzed tandem reaction of cyanomethyl benzoates with arylboronic acids has been achieved. Substitution at the 2-position of cyanomethyl benzoates was found to be crucial for the selective synthesis of oxazoles and isocoumarins. Cyanomethyl benzoates afforded 2,4-diaryloxazoles as products, while 2-benzoyl-substituted cyanomethyl benzoates delivered 3-benzoyl-4-aryl-isocoumarins selectively. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for the selective reaction of cyanomethyl benzoates with arylboronic acids was discussed. (Figure presented.).

Enantioselective Synthesis of Isoxazolines Enabled by Palladium-Catalyzed Carboetherification of Alkenyl Oximes

Reported here is a highly efficient Pd/Xiang-Phos catalyzed enantioselective carboetherification of alkenyl oximes with either aryl or alkenyl halides, delivering various chiral 3,5-disubstituted and 3,5,5-trisubstituted isoxazolines in good yields with up to 97 % ee. The sterically bulky and electron-rich (S,Rs)-NMe-X2 ligand is responsible for the excellent reactivities and enantioselectivities. The salient features of this transformation include mild reaction conditions, general substrate scope, good functional-group tolerance, good yields, high enantioselectivities, easy scale-up, and application in the late-stage modification of bioactive compounds. The obtained products can be readily transformed into useful chiral 1,3-aminoalcohols.

Fused thiophene/quinoxaline low band gap polymers for photovoltaics with increased photochemical stability

We investigate a family of low band-gap polymers based on the common acceptor moiety 2,3-bis-(3-octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline (Q) combined with thiophene (T) or the fused thiophene systems: benzo[2,1-b:3,4-b?]- dithiophene (BDT) or dithieno[3,2-b,2?,3?-d]-thiophene (DTT). The photochemical stability of the three polymers was examined and compared to P3HT. They were found to be substantially more robust than P3HT with a ranking of DTTQ>BDTQ>TQ1P3HT, indicating that the fused ring systems of DTT and BDT impart a large degree of photochemical stability than thiophene. Furthermore devices with normal and inverted geometry were prepared and tested in air. The normal geometry devices showed the highest efficiencies compared to the inverted, in particular owing to a higher Voc, with TQ1 being the most efficient with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.5% (1000 W m -2, AM1.5 G). For the inverted devices TQ1 and DTTQ showed the best PCEs of 0.9%.

The Enantioselective Synthesis of Chiral Carbocyclic Nucleosides via Palladium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Allylic Amination of Alicyclic MBH Adducts with Purines

The enantioselective synthesis of carbocyclic nucleosides through the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic amination of alicyclic Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) adducts with purines was successfully developed. With a combination of Pd2(dba)3/L7 as catalyst, various optically active carbocyclic nucleosides featuring a C=C double bond in the carbocycle moiety were obtained in high yields (up to 97%) with excellent N9/N7-selectivities (>95/5) and enantioselectivities (up to >99.6%). In addition, these nucleoside analogs allowed for rapid transformation to a variety of other interesting structurally diverse chiral carbocyclic nucleosides. (Figure presented.).
