The reaction of [Pd(dtbpf)Cl2] (dtbpf = 1,1?-bis(di-tert- butylphosphino)ferrocene) with a chemical oxidant led unexpectedly to the formation of [Pd(dtbpf)Cl]+. Further study found that a variety of reagents could be used to abstract a chloride ligand from [Pd(dtbpf)Cl 2] to yield [Pd(dtbpf)Cl]+. The solid-state structure suggests the formation of an Fe-Pd interaction. The presence of the bulky tert-butyl groups is essential, as similar reactions with [Pd(PP)Cl2] (PP = other 1,1?-bis(phosphino)ferrocene ligands) results in the formation of [Pd(PP)(mu-Cl)]22+. The analogous platinum compounds have also been investigated and appear to behave in a similar manner. Similar compounds of the type [M?(PP)(PR3)]2+ (M? = Pd, Pt, R = Ph, Me) have been prepared, and a metal-metal interaction has also been observed. Steric and electronic effects dictate the formation of these compounds. X-ray crystal structures were obtained for eight of these compounds and were used as the basis for a computational analysis of the metal-metal interaction. DFT analysis indicates the presence of a weak, noncovalent interaction between the two metal centers. The electrochemical properties of these compounds were examined by cyclic voltammetry and typically show one oxidative wave and either one two-electron or two one-electron reductive waves.

Polymeric acceptor based all-polymer solar cells have attracted wide interest due to their excellent mechanical properties. In order to combine the advantages of both the polymer and perylenediimide-based small-molecular acceptors, we designed and prepared a series of random copolymers via linking perylenediimide to the polymeric backbone of (naphthalenediimide/quinoxaline)-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, which were successfully applied as polymer acceptors in solar cells. The effects of the pendant perylenediimide on the optical, electrochemical and photovoltaic performance were tuned via varying ratios of (quinoxaline-perylenediimide2) and naphthalenediimide. Atomic-force microscopic images showed that all random copolymers exhibited significantly improved miscibility with donor compared with an alternating copolymer reference, which coincided with the higher electron mobility measured by the space charge limited current method. The all-polymer solar cell based on the polymeric acceptor with high perylenediimide content achieved a power conversion efficiency of 4.81%. Although there is minimal conjugation between the perylenediimides and main chains, perylenediimides can also contribute to photocurrent generation.

A palladium-catalyzed cyclobutanation of aryl sulfonates with strained alkenes has been developed. The methodology is featured to achieve the cleavage of both C-O and C-H bonds of phenol derivatives in one pot. Under the reaction conditions, in addition to reactive triflates, the relatively inactive tosylates and mesylates can also be transformed into the corresponding benzocyclobutanes in high yields. It has been found that under pseudo-first-order circumstances these reactions follow the rate law kobsd = k1 + k2[nbd], which shows that these reactions proceed via a pathway independent of alkene concentration (k1 pathway) and a pathway dependent on alkene concentration (k2 pathway). The dramatic decrease of the rate constants k1 and k2 upon increasing the steric bulk of the BIAN ligand and the large negative entropy of activation and low enthalpy of activation for both pathways indicate that the k1 and k2 pathways are closely related and involve associative processes. From the influence of solvent, X and C(O)R ligand, steric and electronic properties of the BIAN ligand, the presence of free halide and free BIAN, and the parameters of activation, mechanisms have been proposed for both pathways. The k1 pathway may proceed via a rate-determining solvent-assisted halide or nitrogen dissociation, followed by alkene association and migratory insertion, while the k2 pathway may occur via a rate-determining migratory alkene insertion in a contact ion pair intermediate. This species may be formed via alkene association followed by either halide or nitrogen dissociation.
