Functional thiophenes, e.g. for organic metal-free dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC), are accessible efficiently via a divergent and diversity-oriented synthetic strategy. Here, we present two straightforward, modular and comparative one-pot syntheses of diversely functionalized thiophenes with high yields starting from simple molecules, namely Suzuki-Lithiation-Formylation-Knoevenagel (SLiForK) sequence and Suzuki-Lithiation-Borylation-Suzuki (SLiBS) sequence. These methods open new avenues to interesting thiophene structure motives with potential applications as pharmaceutical active agents or in molecular electronics, which we have elucidated by a substance library of 21 diversely, mostly unsymmetrically substituted thiophenes. Finally, three novel DSSC dyes were synthesized according to the developed one-pot protocols. For illustration, DSSC devices sensitized by the selected dyes revealed promising solar cell performances, which were rationalized by photophysical and electrochemical characterization and DFT calculations.

Further development of new building blocks is crucial for realizing next-generation, high-performance organic semiconducting materials. In the paper, the design and synthesis of a novel pi-extended analogue of isoindigo, vinylidenedithiophenmethyleneoxindole (VDTOI), and two VDTOI-based copolymers is reported. The centrosymmetric VDTOI unit possesses a special acceptor-donor-acceptor structure and contains a highly planar conjugated backbone because of the presence of S?O conformational locks. Of special importance is the fact that the VDTOI unit has the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and energy levels of -5.35 eV/-3.42 eV, which are similar properties to those of the thiophene-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole building block. The previously mentioned structural features indicate that VDTOI might be a potential building block for constructing polymeric semiconductors. As a trial, two VDTOI-based copolymers were synthesized, namely P1 and P2. The two copolymers show good thermal stability and broad absorption spectra ranging from 330 to 740 nm. Their HOMO energy levels of around -5.40 eV match well with the work function (5.13 eV) of a gold (Au) electrode, which is indicative of effective hole injections from the Au electrodes to polymer semiconductor films. Both the P1- and P2-based field-effect transistors exhibited typical p-type transport characteristics. The highest mobility of 0.35 cm2 V-1 s-1 was achieved in P1-based devices.

Detailed mechanistic studies on the coupling of aryl halides with thiolscatalyzed by palladium complexes of the alkylbisphosphine ligand CyPF- t Bu (1-dicyclohexylphosphino-2-di-tert-butylphosphinoethylfer rocene) are reported. The elementary steps that constitute the catalyticcycle, i.e. oxidative addition, transmetalation and reductive eliminati on, have been studied, and their relative rates are reported. Each of the steps of the catalytic process occurs at temperatures that are much lower than those required for the reactions catalyzed by a combination of palladium precursors and CyPF- t Bu. To explain these differences in rates between the catalytic and stoichiometric reactions, studies were conducted to identify the resting state of the catalyst of the reactions catalyzed by a combination of Pd(OAc)2 and CyPF- t Bu, a combination of Pd(dba) 2 and CyPF- t Bu, or the likely intermediate Pd(CyPF- t Bu)(Ar)(Br). These data show that the major palladium complex in each case lies off of the catalytic cycle. The resting state of the reactions catalyzed by Pd(OAc) 2 andCyPF- t Bu was the palladium bis-thiolate complex [Pd(CyPF-t Bu)(SR) 2 ] (R = alkyl or aryl). The resting state in reactions catalyzed by Pd 2 (dba) 3 and CyPF- t Bu was the binuclear complex [Pd(CyPF t Bu)] 2 (mu 2 ,eta 2 -dba) (9). The resting states of reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic thiols catalyzed by [Pd(CyPF- t Bu)(p-tolyl)(Br)] (3a) were the hydridopalladium thiolate complexes [Pd(CyPF- t Bu)(H)(SR)] (R= alkyl and aryl). All these palladium species have been prepared independently, and the mechanisms by which they enter the catalytic cycle have been examined in detail. These features of the reaction catalyzed by palladium and CyPF- t Bu have been compared with those of reactions catalyzed by the alkylbisphosphine DiPPF and Pd(OAc) 2 or Pd(dba) 2 . Our data indicate that the resting states of these reactions are similar to each otherand that our mechanistic conclusions about reactions catalyzed by palla dium and CyPF- t Bu can be extrapolated to reactions catalyzed by complexes of other electron-rich bisphosphines.
